How to update your electronic business card details

How to change the details on your electronic business card from your dashboard, which sections you can edit, and how to check the update on a phone.

To update an electronic business card, you sign in to your dashboard, edit the section that has changed, such as your phone number, job title or links, and save. The physical card does not change at all. It only points to your profile, so every card you have already handed out shows the new details the next time someone taps or scans it.

Key takeaways

  • Edits are made in your dashboard, not on the card itself.
  • Edits are unlimited and free for the life of the card, with no reprinting.
  • Cards you have already given out open the updated profile straight away.
  • Contacts that someone has already saved on their phone do not update automatically.

If you are new to how these cards work, start with our guide to what an electronic business card is and how it works.

Why updating is different from a paper card

A printed card stores your details in ink. When your number, role or company changes, the card is wrong and the only fix is a reprint. An electronic business card stores nothing personal on the card. The chip and the printed QR code both hold a link to your online profile, and the profile is what people see. Change the profile and you have changed what every one of your cards shows.

This is why there is no limit on edits. You are not paying for a new print run each time; you are simply editing a page.

Step 1: Sign in to your dashboard

Your profile is managed from the dashboard you used when you first set up your electronic business card. Sign in on your phone or a computer. A larger screen is easier for longer edits such as documents or a gallery, but small changes like a new phone number are quick on a phone.

Step 2: Choose the section that has changed

The dashboard groups your profile into sections. On the Brand Presence plan, these include:

The Business Add-ons plan adds tools such as CRM, Bookings, Enquiries, Contact Leads, Forms, Get Reviews, Card Scanner, Subscribers and Export. Each of these can be switched on, changed or tidied from the same dashboard.

Step 3: Make the change and save

Edit the field, then save. Typical updates include:

Step 4: Check the update on a phone

After saving, tap your card on your own phone, or scan its QR code, and look at the profile as a visitor would. Check that:

  1. The new details appear on the page.
  2. Every link opens the right place.
  3. The save-contact button produces a contact with the correct number and email.

If you have an iPhone and an Android phone to hand, try both. Our guide to saving an electronic business card to your contacts shows what the other person sees when they save your details.

What does not update automatically

One point catches people out. When someone saves your contact to their phone, their phone makes its own copy. That copy does not change when you edit your profile. People who tap or scan your card again will see the new details, but an older saved contact stays as it was.

If an important detail changes, such as your phone number, it is worth telling key contacts directly. Your profile link and QR code stay the same, so you can share them again in a message and ask people to re-save your details.

When you might need a new card instead

Most changes never need a new card. The exceptions are things printed on the card itself. If your card carries a printed logo or a custom design and your branding changes, the printed side will not change when you edit your profile. The profile behind it can still be updated as normal.

A new card may also be worth considering if you want a different material, such as moving from PVC to wood or metal. If a card is faulty, our terms set out the 12-month manufacturing warranty on physical cards.
